Self-Portrait

The series presented aims to capture small, involuntary, and recurring gestures, imprinted as part of the work. However indifferent others may consider them, I believe it is precisely the presence of these automatic gestures that reveals the artist's engagement with creation as an activity of thinking. These simple “reactions” are the physical reflection of something as abstract as thought and the creative process. Thus, unconscious gestures demonstrate, precisely, the awareness of artistic creation. In this way, the imagery of self-portraits transcends the realm of mere representation, now evidencing records of a mental space manifested in the body. The gestures, therefore, become physical evidence of a continuous and impermanent intellectual activity. The unconscious movements are quick, repetitive, beginning and ending in the same instant. I found it pertinent that the drawing also reflect this fragility of such an unstable moment; I wanted the portraits, like time, to seem to dissolve, to echo this fluid and impermanent dimension of the creative process. The work developed proposes a metalinguistic reflection, configuring itself as a creation about the very act of creating. In it, the body, and more specifically the face, assumes the role of a visible translation surface of a mental state in transformation, evidenced during the creative process. In this context, an inversion is established: that which, conventionally, would be responsible for guiding, observing, and organizing the creation—the face—becomes an object of recording—these small moments of the drawing. Therefore, it is not a matter here of constructing an idealized, symbolic, and performative image of the self, but of highlighting the subject in the full exercise of creation, traversed by the tensions, anxieties, and mental flows of an artistic endeavor.
